Datadog, Inc. has launched Datadog App Builder, a low-code development tool now generally available. This tool allows teams to quickly create self-service applications and securely integrate them into their monitoring systems. These custom apps expedite large-scale issue resolution, empowering both technical and business users to address incidents directly within Datadog.

Having separate tools for monitoring and remediation can lead to slower response times and longer downtime for companies. When responding to an issue, teams need reliable, well-maintained tooling that’s painless to use and minimizes context switching so that, when an issue arises, responders aren’t spending time combing through monitoring data for context, connecting to hosts and other infrastructure resources, or pivoting between consoles in order to remediate. Datadog App Builder can improve this incident response time.

Datadog App Builder enables the integration of customized, secure and scalable apps directly into teams’ monitoring stacks, empowering organizations to take action on observability insights. Teams can also create self-service apps so anyone in the organization can perform remediation tasks quickly and without context switching. The low-code product allows teams to build apps in hours instead of weeks thanks to its UI components, templates called blueprints, data integrations called connections and support for custom JavaScript code. The connections include Datadog sources like metrics, logs and monitors, 550+ out-of-the-box actions for key tools and platforms (including GitHub, PagerDuty, Jira, CloudFlare, OpenAI and a host of AWS, Azure and GCP services). Now, when teams get insights from Datadog—like high cloud costs, Kubernetes deployment failures or malicious IPs attacking systems—they can use apps to take action to kill costly workloads, re-run a deployment or block malicious IPs with just one click.

“Datadog App Builder enhances our dashboard capability by generating interactive components from data retrieved with API calls. It employs a rich development platform with helpful blueprints and building blocks to get started quickly,” said Benjamin Lush, Site Reliability Engineer at PayByPhone. “Whether used for improving our incident response or visualizing data, App Builder is a much appreciated functionality.”

“As a remote company with employees on four continents, App Builder helps us to empower our colleagues across the globe to take action,” said Lukas Deutz, System Engineer at NationBuilder. “What used to be a ticket to a specific team can now be handled independently through self-service. Instead of adding yet another tool that requires additional training, App Builder is a familiar experience which allows us to keep Datadog as our single pane of glass.”

“Datadog already observes, detects and alerts teams to incidents and threats. Now, with App Builder, we are taking the next step to close the loop for customers by enhancing their ability to take action on those alerts directly within our unified platform,” said Tom Hogarty, Director of Product at Datadog. “With App Builder, we enable our customers to prevent issues proactively instead of reactively and extend their capabilities so teams can build and iterate on ideas faster and ultimately achieve better business outcomes.”

Datadog App Builder is generally available now. To learn more, please visit the website here.

What is the Role of AI in Future-Proofing Trades and Attracting Young Talent

550,000. That’s how many plumbers the US is expected to be short of in 2027, according to an analysis by John Dunham & Associates. This shortage is not confined to a single trade but spans across multiple critical trade jobs such as plumbers, electricians, and carpenters. Additionally, the field service industry – the workers responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing complex equipment and machinery – faces a critical labor shortage exacerbated by an aging workforce and a widening skills gap. In North America, 46% of field techs are over 50 years old, and looking to retire within the next decade.

But, there’s a promising shift. Recent reports highlight that many Gen Z workers are now opting for trade careers over traditional college pathways. The steep cost of college is not the sole motivator steering young people towards skilled trades. As AI becomes more prevalent, many Gen Zers perceive manual labor as less susceptible to full replacement by emerging technologies compared to many white-collar jobs.

While this demographic recognizes that AI won’t completely replace these roles, they see the value in utilizing AI to assist with their tasks. For field service specifically, AI can help by simplifying diagnostics and enhancing troubleshooting, making these roles more accessible and appealing to the next generation.

Additionally, AI’s ability to train new workers on technical skills contributes to the sustainability of the workforce and the overall success of the company. Recent data indicates that job mobility is common across various age groups, particularly among younger workers. Organizations need a method to preserve their workforce’s knowledge when workers inevitably leave, and AI provides a solution for this need.

It also helps mitigate the cost impact associated with underperforming talent; studies such as Aquant’s field service benchmark report indicate that the least effective field service employees can cost an organization 80% more than their most effective counterparts. In contrast, if every employee had the knowledge and skills to perform like the top 20% of the workforce, service costs would be reduced by as much as 22% – and this is achievable, with the help of AI.

How AI is training workers

AI assistance is training and upskilling less-experienced workers in real-time, bringing their efficiency up to par with their skilled counterparts. However, when it comes to sectors like field service, organizations will need a customized approach. Every service challenge is one of a kind and generic AI answers won’t cut it. Certain AI technologies out on the market – ones that take a personalized approach and are built for specific use cases – will collect and process data from multiple trusted sources, including expert insights, using advanced algorithms to deliver actionable information on devices like iPads and mobile phones.

Through advanced pattern recognition, the AI identifies key connections and behavioral patterns in the data, providing deep contextual awareness. Additionally, the AI integrates expert knowledge into reliable data to enhance decision accuracy, supported by an intuitive interface and a predictive algorithm. The system continuously adapts based on real-time feedback and business goals, evaluating solution effectiveness and making necessary adjustments to optimize and personalize service delivery.

By integrating these kinds of AI tools in the training and day-to-day operations of field service jobs, the industry can not only address the current labor shortage but also future-proof its workforce. This ensures that services remain responsive to the high and ever-increasing customer expectations.

Additionally, as AI handles more of the technical load, workers are able to shift their focus towards developing soft skills, such as customer service, communication, and teamwork. This shift makes the trades more appealing to a broader range of individuals, including those who may not have previously considered a career in this field due to its technical demands. Emphasizing soft skills enhances job satisfaction and adaptability, making trade careers more dynamic and fulfilling in an ever-evolving work environment.

LG Business Solutions USA has introduced LG Business Cloud, a robust web-application platform that consolidates the capabilities of LG’s Software as a Service (SaaS) solutions into a single platform.

LG Business Cloud enables customers to establish a highly secure common point of access for their LG digital signage devices using a straightforward, one-time sign-up process. User privilege, access control and single sign-on (SSO), license management, site and location structure are all designed to be easy to use yet flexible for the largest deployment.

“LG has long been a leader in providing intuitive, scalable software and platform solutions to help integrators and their customers remotely monitor and manage digital signage networks as well as distribute and customize content,” said LG Business Solutions USA Senior Vice President Michael Kosla. “Now, the launch of the LG Business Cloud puts all the tools they need to manage these services in one place, with clear value propositions and a consolidated platform experience.”

Kosla added that the company’s focus on software and services, which supports LG’s global transformation into a Smart Life Solutions company beyond a hardware manufacturer, provides significant benefits to commercial display customers. The LG Business Cloud is a multi-service SaaS cloud platform that provides integrators and business owners simple access to the powerful capabilities of LG ConnectedCare, LG Pro:Centric Cloud, LG Pro:Centric Stay and LG SuperSign Cloud. By eliminating the need to install and manage on-site servers and software running on the servers, each service helps businesses further reduce up-front costs and long-term maintenance requirements.

LG SuperSign Cloud

LG SuperSign Cloud is a powerful content management system (CMS) designed to boost a retailer’s digital signage campaigns by providing “anywhere, anytime” control of content, remote control of individual displays or the entire network of displays to set on/off scheduling and make real-time changes to content. The software enables easy uploading and distribution of content as well as expert-level editing tools, including music selection.

SuperSign Cloud users can also enhance their content creation using third-party design templates, digital art, and even live on-screen presentation of social media feeds. For example, the specialized DSmenu service allows users to easily create digital menu boards, while PosterMyWall helps users design eye-catching promotional materials — each offering incredible value to retail and food establishments that require frequent updates. The ArtPlayer service grants access to an array of digital art, while Screenfeed enables companies to simply and cleanly display Instagram feeds through digital signage. Wantreez Music provides expertly curated playlists that harmonize with on-screen content to elevate ambiance in a variety of settings.

LG Pro:Centric Stay

The platform makes these powerful capabilities available to virtually any size short-term rental hosts to multinational ”staycation” businesses. It’s easy to create welcome pages, local guides and custom content through Pro:Centric’s familiar drag-and-drop interface that includes widgets such as weather, maps, flight information and more.

LG ConnectedCare

LG ConnectedCare is a network manager’s best friend, offering extremely powerful tools to ensure consistent operation of the entire network of displays regardless of deployment size or variety of displays. This is an active monitoring service that automatically sends alert emails to preset recipients for more than 20 common operations errors, and enables remote adjustments to resolve issues and fine tune device settings.

The main selling point is the ability to eliminate or greatly reduce screen down time, which can directly affect a property’s revenue and customer satisfaction. Furthermore, the ability to manage multiple devices at once reduces labor time and boosts efficiency when enacting changes or updates.

“Each of these cloud-based services provides high-value functions, efficiency gains and up-front cost savings to help businesses maximize guest experiences, revenues and communication opportunities,” Kosla said. “With the new consolidated user experience unveiled at InfoComm, the LG Business Cloud can be a game-changer for commercial integrators and their customers.”

Cirata announced support for IBM General Parallel File System (GPFS), a cluster file system used for IBM Spectrum Scale data lakes. The newly released Live GPFS support, included in Cirata Data Migrator 2.5, significantly reduces latency between storage changes and replication or migration results, while also improving the performance and scalability of GPFS-resident data assets migrating to the cloud.

Cirata Data Migrator lowers data latency while enhancing data migration performance for better data integration outcomes. The new Cirata Live GPFS capability initiates data transfer from a source GPFS file system as changes occur, without disruption to the storage environment. Ideally suited for cloud migrations, disaster recovery processes and continuous data migration use cases, Cirata Data Migrator with Live GPFS not only improves migration scale and performance but also supports fine-grained control and audit logging for assured compliance in increasingly multicloud data management environments.

According to Gartner®, “81% of respondents in organizations using public cloud said their organizations were using more than one cloud service provider (CSP).” “As the number of CSPs an organization uses increases, the complexity of managing them also increases. This can have negative consequences, such as performance issues associated with data latency, unplanned cost overruns or data egress fees, and difficulties with data integration.”(1)

“Modern multicloud workloads require high performance access to a common set of data to support scale-out storage and high availability. This is performed by IBM GPFS with great efficiency,” said Paul Scott-Murphy, Chief Technology Officer, Cirata. “By supporting this valued IBM GPFS capability as a Live source, Cirata Data Migrator gives organizations leveraging GPFS-resident data assets the confidence that they can flexibly migrate and replicate data with high performance and control to nearly any target, anywhere.”

Cirata Data Migrator with Live GPFS delivers the following benefits:

  • Reduces latency: By taking action immediately after change, Cirata Data Migrator minimizes the latency between source storage modifications and the actions to transfer or modify content at the targets. This can minimize recovery point objectives (RPO), and assist in architecting solutions with zero recovery time objectives (RTO).
  • Improves scale: Cirata Data Migrator avoids the need to repeatedly scan a source file system to identify change when Live migration is in effect. This is particularly beneficial for systems with very large numbers of storage items, allowing vastly more scalable outcomes and minimizing the overhead imposed on storage.
  • Enhances performance: By avoiding the need to repeatedly scan source storage, Cirata Data Migrator with Live GPFS avoids an entire class of overhead that solutions relying on scheduled jobs incur. The result is higher performance, and reduced computational overheads.
  • Enables finer control: Cirata Data Migrator offers fine-grained control of which data assets participate in migration. The Live GPFS feature incorporates these mechanisms natively, so that techniques like path mapping and pattern-based exclusion of file system content are incorporated into the core processing performed during data transfer, exposing all of the fine-grained selectivity directly to users if wanted.
  • Delivers auditable, accurate outcomes: Every action taken in response to changing source data is logged in auditable form, complementing the detailed reporting already available from migration verification to help ensure that migration outcomes are complete and accurate.

Cirata Data Migrator is a fully automated solution that automates Hadoop data transfer and integration and moves on-premises HDFS data, Hive metadata, local filesystem, or cloud data sources to any cloud or on-premises environment, even while those datasets are under active change. Cirata Data Migrator requires zero changes to applications or business operations and moves data of any scale without production system downtime, business disruption, and with zero risk of data loss. Migration targets supported include the Hadoop Distributed File System, Alibaba Cloud Object Storage Service, Amazon S3, Azure Data Lake Storage Gen 2, Google Cloud Storage, IBM Cloud Object Storage and Oracle Object Store.

Cirata Data Migrator 2.5 is available now including Live GPFS support; click here for more information.

Lucidworks published the findings of its second annual Generative AI Global Benchmark Study, the largest ongoing study of its kind worldwide. The survey gathered insights from business leaders in North America, EMEA, and the APAC region who are actively engaged in generative AI initiatives. The report examines critical areas of investment in generative AI and tracks the progress organizations are making in adopting this technology.

Flattened Spending Points to More Thoughtful Planning

Generative AI’s explosive growth is cooling as businesses face cost and security hurdles. Global AI spending plans are down sharply, with only 63% planning increases (vs. 93% last year). USA-based organizations remain above average with 69% planning to increase AI spend. While investment remains high, more companies are prioritizing thoughtful planning to balance the potential of this new technology with managing risks and costs.

Deployment Delays Stall ROI

Despite initial hype, slow deployment and low success rates are commonplace, with only 25% of planned projects fully implemented. This lag is stalling anticipated ROI, with 42% of companies yet to see a significant benefit from generative AI initiatives. Tech and retail sectors stand out with higher deployment and realized gains, but overall, most industries are slow to move beyond the pilot phase.

Implementation Costs Raise Alarms

Security remains a top concern for business leaders, but cost worries have surged 14x in the past year. Additionally, concerns around response accuracy have risen 5x, likely due to issues with hallucinations. This highlights the need for careful large language model selection to balance cost and ensure accurate, secure results.

Practical Applications Are First to Deployment

Businesses are using generative AI to establish clear guidelines for AI use (governance) and automate tasks like generating first drafts of code (reducing G&A costs). This trend is driven by concerns around data privacy, security, and skyrocketing implementation costs. Qualitative applications like generating FAQs are seeing success, but more complex quantitative applications like fraud detection in financial services or predictive maintenance in manufacturing are lagging behind. The ability to analyze unstructured data and generate actionable insights holds the greatest potential for generative AI’s future value.

“The initial wave of enthusiasm for generative AI is being met with a more strategic approach,” said Mike Sinoway, CEO, Lucidworks. “Businesses are recognizing the potential of this technology, but they’re also cautious about the risks and costs. This is reflected in the flattened spending, which suggests a shift toward more thoughtful planning. This planning ensures AI adoption delivers real value, balancing the need to stay competitive with managing costs and potential risks.”

The 2024 benchmark study also includes the following findings:

  • Across all organizations, 36% of leaders plan to keep spending flat, compared to only 6% in last year’s survey
  • Only 49% of Chinese leaders plan to increase AI spending in 2024, a massive drop from 100% in 2023
  • Close to 70% of financial services companies plan to increase spending over the next 12 months, followed closely by tech at 68% and B2C retail at 64%
  • Roughly 20% of companies report significant delays during deployment with only one in five planned revenue and growth initiatives and one in eight OpEx cost reduction initiatives implemented
  • Retailers have some of the highest concerns around cost (63%), likely due to the required responsiveness and high number of customer queries
  • Nearly eight in 10 companies use commercial LLMs and 21% have opted for open source only
  • A third of business leaders feel like they’re falling behind competitors despite almost everyone struggling to implement this new technology
